Fishing

April 1st marks the start of trout season in most places.

The Adirondacks is home to some great fishing, despite all the hype about acid rain. The Adirondacks is completely in the Northern Zone of the fishing regulations. Right now, ice fishing is getting into gear as the ice is now thick enough for safety. The 'Daks is famous for trout and Lake Ontario has salmon. But trout fishing is closed in most streams except in lakes. In NYS, all fishermen must have licenses, except the ocean shores and the Hudson River south of the Troy Dam.

The Adirondacks are divided into two regions for fishing regs by the DEC. Region 5 (Warren, Essex, Clinton, Franklin. Saratoga, Fulton, Hamilton Counties) and Region 6 (St. Lawrence, Herkimer, Lewis, Oneida Counties). Alewife or blueback herring bait is illegal in Region 5. April 1st marks the start of trout season in most places. But many lakes and rivers have trout open all year round. Check on links below to DEC for more info.
