The twin villages of Fonda - Fultonville are on opposite sides of the Mohawk River and are connected by the bridge on NY Route 30A. Fonda's on the north bank and Fultonville's on the south. Straddling the major roads and railroads in the Mohawk Valley, these aren't pretty tourist villages but working towns. But they have their charms and colonial history. Fonda's the county seat. Fonda just finished off Main Street, Route 5 reconstruction and is looking a 100% better than last fall. If you like to watch trains, you can watch freights and Amtrak roar through Fonda on the mainline at the grade crossings. It boast the Grecian Revival, circa 1836, Montgomery County Courthouse along the river. Thousands of crows roost in the trees in front of it, like some low budget horror movie in the high intensity lights at night.
Exit 28 of the New York State Thruway, I-90 puts you off in Fultonville, where you turn left on Riverside Drive to get to NY Route 30A. There a a few all night truck stops there on Riverside Drive. Then you turn right on 30A and go over the Mohawk River/Barge Canal and the railroad tracks on an old steel bridge. When you get to NY Route 5 at the traffic light in Fonda, turn left and go a block and turn right on NY Route 30A to go up the hill to Johnstown and Gloversville. This is where the Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway begins.
