Cranberry Lake is about 25 mile drive north-west of Tupper Lake in the Town of Clifton, St. Lawrence County, but only twelve miles on a straight line. St. Lawrence County is the north-westernmost and largest county in NY State and it borders Canada and the St. Lawrence. Seaway The Oswegatchie River starts at Cranberry Lake. The lake is also the third largest in the Adirondack Parks. Along the way you cross the Grasse River too, where the state provides fishing access. There is a state campground east of the Cranberry Lake off of NY 3, open in season only.
All the major mountains are to the south and east so it's pretty level but rolling drive all the way west to Watertown from the lake. NY Route 3 is one of the oldest and best state highways in New York State, even better than our friend, NY 30. NY 3 starts along Lake Ontario and ends in Plattsburgh. It goes through Carthage, Tupper & Saranac Lake and Bloomingdale. From Tupper, you climb a couple hills to Piercefield. Piercefield is just in St. Lawrence County and is on the Raquette River by a big hydro-electric dam. As you start to climb, you pass the county road south to Mount Arab and Conifer. They are small settlements that were old logging camps. There is the Conifer Forest Easement there where you have limited access and hunting privileges. Then you climb hills all the way up to Childwold, another small settlement. Between Piercefield and Childwold, you pass the huge Massawepie Boy Scout Camp in Gale. In Sevey Corners, you meet NY Route 56 which goes north to Potsdam and Massena. Past Sevey Corners, jct NY 56, it gets flatter and wider and is pretty flat & smooth all the way through to Cranberry Lake. The most striking thing about this great and hilly road is the rock colors and the birch trees, which give the road a very unique and beautiful look.
This part of the county is very sparsely settled and is excellent for the outdoors person. Snowmobiling is big here, with Cranberry Lake as the hub for several trails, plus the huge lake itself is a raceway in the winter when iced up.
Also, as of 6/06, the cheapest gasoline around can be found at Sevey Corners, better than 12 cents/gallon cheaper than Tupper Lake.
